On a theoretical level, I might agree with some of your stated advantages of vertical integration, however, in practice, seldom have I experienced a vertically integrated organization that is able to maintain focus, response and excellence over many sub-product lines simultaneously.

They tend to be less market driven; they overextend a product like cycle; they are less innovative, lack capacity for un-forecasted demand.

Dell's approach is to focus on strong, responsive partnerships with sub-contractors like you outline in point (2) that enables them to lead the market in points (1) & (3).

This way, they do not suffer from the NIH factor and allows flexibility unequalled in vertically integrated operations.
