The world is full of personal judgments

The world is full of a lot of ugly things.

I have plenty of personal opinions about people, but I try to keep them from my posting. If that's what you mean by sanitizing a discussion, then yes, that is exactly what I want. I love disagreements and differing opinions, but I like them without animosity or labeling and namecalling. And I find the way people discuss others on other threads on SI so completely incomprehensible and unpleasant, that I now confine myself to DAR and here and occasionally PfP. life is just too short to spend it being hurtful.

(obviously I would make a crappy litigator)

That's a good question about what expectations were raised by the speech. I would hazard a guess that while people didn't think the troops were all rushing to the next flight home, they didn't anticipate that three years later we would have so little to show for it, with so many soldiers doing multiple or extended tours, and with so many, many losses and bloodshed. That probably accounts for some of the feeling of bitterness.
