Gangsta Rap, IMO, has diverted attention from less hideous and extreme messages found in "softer" rap (begging forgiveness of any familiar with more accurate description of this "music").
Over the holidays, I watched two visiting children (11 & 13) mainlining MTV. These kids know the "words" to all the material and seem to enjoy mimicking the moves of performers. I didn't note any actual "Gangsta" lyrics, but, was overwhelmed by horribly repetitious, aggressive and primitive glorification of self-gratification - usually at the expense of someone else. Absent specific references to killing cops and fucking the bitch, parents don't seem to be paying attention.
My daughter had a brief brush with MTV addiction about 15 years ago. I, of course, hated it. But, mostly because of the precious time wasted watching it. I also objected to the totalitarian thought/emotion "control" fostered (IMO) by music videos.
Present-day MTV seems far more sophisticated and deliberate in influencing youngsters. Just my opinion, of course, but I think it qualifies as child endangerment.
Before throwing bricks at this old grouch, I hope all will spend a whole evening actually watching MTV, preferably in the company of young people (feel free to substitute musical programming on BET).
It's NOT "all rock and roll to me."
