Is the Government trying to Kill You? This week CBS reported that a Government Agency recommends that women do not get 'Mammogram Screenings' until age 50 instead of age 40. WHY?
Don't like those new mammogram recommendations? You're not alone. November 17, 2009
'When it comes to mammograms, not only can reasonable minds disagree, they can all legitimately do so while arguing for the greater good. One would think ... The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force [a Government Agency] has recommended against regular mammograms for women under the age of 50 and to say that this recommendation was not universally endorsed or warmly received would be an understatement.'
As today's Los Angeles Times article noted:
"Other groups that issue guidelines about screening and prevention, such as the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, immediately attacked the federal panel's conclusion, saying that they would not change their guidelines and would continue to urge women to undergo the tests."
For details on that official dissension, here's the statement from the American Cancer Society.
It says in part: "The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual screening using mammography and clinical breast examination for all women beginning at age 40. Our experts make this recommendation having reviewed virtually all the same data reviewed by the USPSTF, but also additional data that the USPSTF did not consider."
Here's the full response from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
And here's a widely held perspective from Kathleen Reardon, a USC professor and, not incidentally, a breast cancer survivor. She begins today's essay on the Huffington Post:
"I'd be dead by now if it weren't for breast self-examination. And had my doctor been less convinced of his own guidelines regarding women without a known history of breast cancer, my cancer would have been detected earlier and I would have been treated sooner and less aggressively. I was 32 years old."
The task force's concerns about the risk of false positives and biopsy complications are very real, but the defenders of the new recommendations have been relatively quiet — with a few notable exceptions...

American Cancer Society Responds to Changes to USPSTF Mammography Guidelines
The American Cancer Society guidelines will not change; annual mammography recommended for women 40 and over
Atlanta 2009/11/16 -November 16, 2009— The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) [a Government Agency] today announced that it is changing its guidelines for mammography and no longer recommends routine screening for women between the ages of 40 and 49. Below is a statement from Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer, American Cancer Society.
“The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual screening using mammography and clinical breast examination for all women beginning at age 40. Our experts make this recommendation having reviewed virtually all the same data reviewed by the USPSTF, but also additional data that the USPSTF did not consider. When recommendations are based on judgments about the balance of risks and benefits, reasonable experts can look at the same data and reach different conclusions...
“In 2003, an expert panel convened by the American Cancer Society conducted an extensive review of the data available at the time, which was not substantially different from the data included in the current USPSTF review. Like the USPSTF, the Society’s panel found convincing evidence that screening with mammography reduces breast cancer mortality in women ages 40-74..."
“The USPSTF [Government Agency] says that screening 1,339 women in their 50s to save one life makes screening worthwhile in that age group. Yet USPSTF also says screening 1,904 women ages 40 to 49 in order to save one life is not worthwhile. The American Cancer Society feels that in both cases, the lifesaving benefits of screening outweigh any potential harms. Surveys of women show that they are aware of these limitations, and also place high value on detecting breast cancer early..."

Do you trust your government ??? That the U.S. government would make such a suggestion is totally illogical. My own mother caught her 'Breast Cancer' by an early exam while she was in her early 40s! She was able to live over another 30 years with surgery and medication treatment - Tamoxifen medication.<t&tpal> breastcancer.org
This all smacks loudly as 'a Warning' as to how our New 'National Health Care System' will work. It sounds more like population control than sound or logical Medicine. Women should be outraged!!! - my wife is. At age 46 she has had Breast Cancer Screenings since age 40 under her Doctors recommendation !!!
DO YOU TRUST YOUR LIFE TO THE GOVERNMENT ??? WELL WELCOME TO NATIONAL HEALTH CARE & GOVERNMENT SPONSORED 'EARLY DEATH' !!!
P.S. Re: Government Health 1.) Go get your government sponsored Swine Flu Shot's - Not 2.) Support National Healthcare - Not 3.) Ignore Early Breast Cancer - Not 4.) Pre-plan your Funeral - the U.S. Government seems ready to help you with that!!!
5.) Get the Picture! Get outraged and support Ron Paul and a Regime change in this asinine 'Socialist U.S. of A.
