I had a long exchange of posts with Craig Crawford on free trade. Some of my arguments for it were persuasive I think, but he also countered with some good points. An important one is employment rate in your own country.

The best way to express it is this..... If all the UK's manufacturing jobs are going to China (and they are) I'm going to get me a government job and join a union. Then I will strike for a 100% pay rise if I can't live comfortably. F**k saving people from burning houses too, I would not do that for £100k+ never mind £16k+.

So, a country does need a productive population, otherwise it's tax base (rate, which I agree it has to be minimum, to be competitive in world trade) would fall apart. You do need some government, a strong effective military, and a civic infrastructure. The case for free trade has to be moderated on that point I think.
