I think the answer to your question may go a little deeper. Until very recently, with the advent of the World Wide Web becoming synonymous with the Internet, the online world was pretty much the domion of males, with males outnumbering females to the tune of about 99:1. The same holds true with the stock market. In light of that, I think it is still second nature to many online and stock market oldtimers to assume they are "speaking" to a male unless there is clear evidence to the contary, an assumption which has transferred to many of the newcomers. As always, just my opinion.
