Thankyou Greenpeace, for your "ENVIRONMENTAL" work. Now the US can dump MORE herbicide (pre- and post- emergence) on soybean fields. With Roundup herbicide and RR beans, farmers don't need pre- emergence control...they could use less chemical. Oh well, so much for the environment!

By the way, the DuPont "non-genetic" soybeans are created by genetic mutation with chemicals...but this is what the EU wants. I guess if they will pay more, fine. The "non-genetic" term is basically a misnomer...oh well, the Europeans haven't shown themselves to be very bright in these matters.

I am kind of pissed off at Greenpeace for FORCING the US to dump more chemicals on te soil. I'll bet the farmer doesn't end up coming out ahead, even with the premium, based on the fact he uses more chemical with the DuPont beans.

DuPont Offers Premium Contract Prices to Farmers

(Indianapolis, IN) March 22,1999 -- DuPont announced today that it is offering corn and soybean farmers in parts of Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky opportunities to earn premiums over standard prices on 1.5 million acres. These higher-value crops will generate $7-8 million in additional income at a time when the U.S. farm economy is facing low commodity prices. The premium contracts are provided under the STS and "High Oil Corn" programs and are being managed through Optimum Quality Grains, a joint venture between DuPont and Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.

STS soybeans, which use standard breeding techniques, are treated with Synchrony® STS® herbicide for identity preservation. If farmers need to control waterhemp and black nightshade, DuPont's recommendation is Authority® pre-emergence followed by Synchrony® STS® for season-long weed control. The principal markets are European and Asian processing customers seeking soybeans that have been identity preserved.

ADM to offer premium to grow non-genetic soy
CHICAGO, May 5 (Reuters) - Major grain processor Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM - news) said Wednesday it will pay farmers a premium price for soybeans grown with a certain non-genetically altered variety of seed.

The soybeans, known as Synchrony Treated Soybeans (STS), are produced by DuPont Co. (DD - news), and are bred to resist Synchrony herbicide, also produced by DuPont.

Farmers participating in the STS program would receive an 18-cent per bushel premium over the Decatur, Ill., market price for soybeans, Martin Andreas, senior vice president for Decatur-based ADM, said in an interview.
