The big difference between now and the 1987 crash was money on the sidelines.

In 1987, I and most funds were fully invested with little cash. When the selling hit, the funds had to sell to cover redemptions. This snowballed when programs selling hit by the larger houses. Back then, I couldn't get out and cut losses, becuase the brokers phone was busy. I made the the mistake of selling the next day at a huge loss.

Today, I see many funds 10% in cash. Almost a record high. Just sitting and waiting for the retail investor to capitutlate.

If you didn't sell before the election, just ride it out. Otherwise just pick some good companies that have been beaten down.
