Software providers can take this and get involved in relatively simple hardware design for specialized applications .... Maya, Apache (mod_ssl mostly), MySQL, DB2.

I suspect some of the reason Google picked this chip is for this feature. My guess is there are algorithms that x86 (probably most others too ... ) blows chunks for, that you can quickly fabricate a specialized chip for it in Verilog or VHDL, and speed things up 1000%.

Depending on how easy it is to design this stuff, I'd say it's a killer product.
