I admit, it does give credibility to the Russian accusations that Al Qaeda has influence in Chechnya. Who ever planned this clearly doesn't care what actually happens to the Chechens. No doubt they figure that world reaction to what the Russians are about to do will help their cause. They probably sold it as the horror the Russians will feel will cause them to give up because they are weak.

Some reports did describe very international list of the hostage takers, including Arabs. I don't know if the reports will be confirmed. The link between the Chechens and Al Qaeda is not really that hard to establish even prior to this attack.


There are some Chechen Arabs and most Chechens are Sunni Muslim so that description is not very telling.
