Very scholarly effort. I liked it and recommend it as a good overview of our situation with historical perspective that is fairly solid. Everyone who cares about this topic should take a serious look at that article. I want to make two comparisons.

"Egyptian sheikh--Sheikh Rifa'a Rafi' al-Tahtawi, who went to Paris as chaplain to the first group of Egyptian students sent to Europe—"

This guy is often quoted by Egyptians I have met as saying something like: "I found Islam in Egypt but to my disappointment, no Muslims. I traveled through Europe and found no Islam but there in Europe, I met Muslims."

Compare that with the Wahabism of OBL: "Its argument is that the root of Arab-Islamic troubles lies in following the ways of the infidel." This is the common radical view we see in modern times, held by terrorists, anti-Americans, in the media, anti-Muslims, etc. It comes from Sunni Radicals but there is a similar extremist view held by Shi'ites led by Amadenijad's buddy, Moktada Al-Sadr and extends throughout radicalism in the Shi'ite world.

Conclusion: The moderate view held by most of the Billion+ Muslims in the world is closest to Sheikh Rifa'a Rafi' al-Tahtawi. They see the benefit of blending culture to both traditional Western Governmental ideals and sound Islamic principle. When this type of tolerance and interest in the good of human society, no matter who owns it is promoted, the well being of all is promoted. Unfortunately what gets most attention is the rock hard extremists from both perspectives.
