Nadine, disparaging the style [yes, the use of "narratives" is a bit tedious] may cause you to miss the substance, and that essay has a lot of it.

I don't read this essay as anti-American at all. I read it as written by someone who favors modernity, but sees it as being under assault, aided by some of our own mistakes, primarily the aggrandizing of our enemies. Or perhaps fueled by some sort of inevitable historical cycle.

America is the lightning rod because of religious reasons, because of globalization, and because humanity cheers for the under dog, no matter how evil.

One thing he did mention only obliquely is the weakness we have shown over infractions which historically required a ruthless, Roman-like response.

I wouldn't dismiss this essay out of hand, and certainly not because of the windy academic language. There is a terrible lot of insight in it.
