Ameritrade's model is pretty familiar - it's AOL's. They're absolutely correct to get the customer base in place and upgrade the service as they go. Once a consumer starts using a certain internet broker it's not likely they will switch for a long time, if at all. I use DLJ Direct but I own Ameritrade shares because their marketing is exactly what will make them successful in the mass market. I missed the AOL stock bonanza due to a similar mindset to what you're saying and I don't intend to miss this one. There may be problems along the way but building a customer base is paramount to all else at this early stage.
