Now if the letters must be in the same order as the old boyfriends name, there is only 1 way to arrange the letters (not six).

My point was that the boyfriends might themselves have the same first letter in their names, and then by that letter alone you could not distinguish the order, nor does it reduce the pool of letters for the next pick.

(also, you only need subtract 5 if all three names have the same initial letter. Although there are 6 combinations that would be indistiguishable, you still need to count one of them and so only 5 are redundant.
