Qualcomm's Jacobs: Wireless Access To Net Will Grow Dow Jones News Service ~ April 19, 2000 ~ 11:35 am EST
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Over the next year we will see movement in wireless access to the Internet and Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) is introducing new technology for that market, said Irwin Jacobs, chief executive.
Wireless technology will be a major business area in a couple of years, Jacobs told CNBC in an interview Wednesday.
Qualcomm, which just reported fiscal second-quarter earnings, cautioned that chip sales would be down for the second quarter, but Jacobs said Qualcomm is now seeing chip sales rebounding.
If wireless growth continues, the chip unit will do quite well, said Jacobs. " We are also introducing new technology to spur further sales," he added.
When asked where Qualcomm will expand internationally, Jacobs said China is a major market that is adding quite a few phones as it tries to make up for the fact that there weren't many phones in the past.
"It is a very interesting potential market for us and we signed agreements to enable Chinese companies to license our technology," he said. The agreements have been moving slow, in part because of external things like the World Trade Organization demonstrations and also internal issues in China, Jacobs said.
He added that Qualcomm is now poised to move ahead with those agreements and is talking to many companies in China.
