Israel calls for 'assassination' of Hamas's political chief
A SENIOR Israeli minister yesterday called for the assassination of Khaled Mashaal, the Damascus-based Hamas chief, as Israel's military killed five militants and wounded at least six civilians during airstrikes and tank shelling.

Hamas and other militant groups kept up their shelling of Israeli targets yesterday, firing nine rockets, six of which landed inside Israeli territory, the army said.

At sundown, a rocket fired from Gaza hit a car in the nearby Israeli town of Sderot, killing a woman and wounding two other people.

Avi Dichter, the minister for internal security, told Israeli Army Radio that Mr Mashaal, the head of Hamas's political bureau, was in Israel's gunsights.

"I am convinced that at the first opportunity we will take leave of him. Khaled Mashaal is not immune in Damascus or anywhere else."
