Although the NY Sun has a point, I say it's mostly those totally bogus polls coupled with a relentless, treacherous MSM that lies, smears & slanders 24/7.
What's Driving Bush's Poll Numbers? Betsy's Page The New York Sun has its own theory on what is driving Bush's numbers down. They discount all the usual explanations: the war, the NSA surveillance story, media bias, the economy, or immigration. But I think they're really on to something with this explanation.
For our part, we have little doubt the president's popularity rating would recover smartly if a presidential election were to approach and voters were to have to focus on a choice between Mr. Bush and not a platonic ideal of a perfect president but a flesh-and-blood Democrat.
I would guess that about 10 points of the falloff of President's poll numbers since his reelection come from Republicans who have become disillusioned with Bush for a variety of reasons. That is because he is being perceived in isolation instead of being contrasted to the next reasonable alternative. In 2004, that alternative was John Kerry. Republicans took one look at that match up and decided that they liked Bush just fine. But now, there is no challenger, just as The Sun writes, "a platonic ideal." Well, we don't get Platonic ideals to run our country. We don't get people who never mispeak, never take a wrong step, never make a choice with which we disagree.
