Because it wouldn't be workable. The country holds thousands of popular vote elections in every town, county and state each year, and they manage to elect 1000's of folks to office. The only election where we use electors in the Presidential election.

Hell, if the people won't accept the results of a popular election, then Democracy won't work on any level. You need a little faith in your fellow citizens; that's what the whole thing is founded on.
