Just to clarify things up, do not get fooled by the Gateway 1.4GHz at 1999$. Gateway used a subtile trick to drive the prices down : they equip the p4 with a cheap Geforce2 MX which cost about 300$ less than a Geforce2 Ultra64Mb.

for $1999 you have a p4 1400MHz with a Geforce2 Mx

for the same price you get an Athlon 1.1GHz with a
Geforce2 GTS (+$100) and a 60 GB HD (+$75)

Still, I wonder where gateway cut here... RDRAM cost a good $200 more and the CPU should add another $300... or they cut in their margin, or Intel give them a good 300$ in rebate.

I think Gateway cut their margin on this cheapo and inflated it on the $3499 P4-1500 which has about the same value as the Micron Millenia 1.2/266 for $2699(one has a CD-RW, the other has dual-HD (Raid))
