If caught some of the world series of poker also, and it seem that the game has volitility (luck) which is very high in relation to gains (alpha).

SO the players cooly and mechanically play their hands and luck occasionally takes them to the top of the pile.

But it also seems that sometimes they press or bluff - deviate from the long term statistically optimum moves whne they have a preception that they have the advantage.

There was a great article in the Atlantic monthly aboput 2 years ago by some one who actually got to about number 23 or so in Las Vegas.... I 'll see if I can find it.
