I guess your asking if one could be using circuit-switched GSM voice and packet-switched data 1xRTT data simultaneously (or vice-versa).

I suppose at some time in the future that would be theoretically possible but in the relatively near term I would say that you probably will maintain a connection to one core network using one RAN at any given time even if a carrier has coverage in the same geography with either overlapping parallel networks or a single core network with overlapping RANs.

Theoretically, this would be more feasible if you were on a single core network (using the AuC of that network) with multiple RANs rather than two entirely separate networks.
