What Role Does Compression Have With DICOM X-ray Angiography?

Data Compression has been a very controversial subject as it relates to X-ray Cardiology. This confusion exists within both industry as well as the medical community. Let's take a moment to understand the status, issues and plan for compression in DICOM X-ray Angiography.

XA Compression Status

The X-ray Angiographic Adhoc Group, composed of medical equipment manufacturers and clinicians, selected lossless JPEG compression as the ONLY accepted approach to store/encode data on the DICOM X-ray Angiographic Interchange disc. The demos at DISC '95, DISC Amsterdam '95, DISC '96 have demonstrated lossless compression of digital x-ray angiograms.

XA Compression Confusion

DICOM actually does enable images to be transferred or stored in lossy JPEG format. Confused yet? In fact, there are other cardiac imaging modalities (e.g., Echocardiographic Ultrasound) that utilize lossy JPEG to store images onto CD-R and other media. The clinical acceptance of lossy compression in medical imaging is extremely subjective. The permissible levels of compression must be understood so that diagnostic information is not sacrificed. The XA Adhoc Group has decided not to allow the use of lossy compression as part of the basic DICOM XA Interchange standard (Application Profile). This does not, however, prevent vendors from adding lossy compression to the Interchange disc. The DICOM standard does provide a mechanism to add private vendor data to the disc and this is the approach that some vendors are using to implement dual-mode compression.

Any chance that CUBE could make a visit and convince them to try MPEG2 and save a lot of space in the files?
