Was commenting on why Calvinism seems so objectionable to most modern people (even those who don't think they're modern). People today generally believe in and value freedom and equality (under the law and of opportunity, not necessarily of talents). Check the language in the Declaraton of Independence, which speaks of all men being created equal and being endowed by the Creator with unalienable rights including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Calvinism says that on a spiritual level, things are the opposite of this. Instead of equality of men under the law and liberty, it proclaims freedom is an illusion and offers unconditional election by God of a very few and limited atonement by God offered only to that chosen few. Calvinism is more congruent with an age where the few had the right to rule the many, where some countries and races had the right to rule others, to take their lands, even to take their persons as slaves.
BTW, of course you have freedom of speech, as do we all. Note: Freedom of speech comes under that modern concept of liberty. |
