Most Americans had never heard of Iraq back then. I remember because I met a couple of people from Iraq and they were amazed that I knew where they were from. I do have a hard time believing that, for example, the average New York Jew felt any love for Saddam. After all, the Israelis bombed the Iraqi nuclear power plant in 1981.

The argument makes as much sense as arguing that we favored Pol Pot because he was fighting the North Vietnamese.

At any rate, at the time I was giving money to the Contras and to the Mujahideen, and praying for the downfall of the Soviet Union. Saddam has always been Stalin lite, never a hero of mine.

I did feel some sympathy for Reza Pahlavi.

People who admired Che Guevara, Castro, Danny Ortega, Allende, etc., may well have admired Saddam. I wouldn't know because I didn't hang out with people like that.
