It looks like TI's MPEG2 offering will not ship until at least the 4th quarter. Too late for Christmas. 1394 Firewire -- I just received an audio catalog from Crutchfield, and it listed several Sony digital camcorders (all over $2000) and a Sony digital VCR (over $4000!!!). Every one of these products had a Firewire interface to transfer data.
