<<It's possible, though I can't imagine Ray Smith being that pig-headed if he saw the market going the other direction.>>
If BA/NYNEX/USW go CAP and the rest go DMT, what breaks? How are the CAP telcos disadvantaged?
<<Again, will TI, Siemens, Motorola, Ericcson, Alcatel and ADI be shut out of the North American market?>>
JS: "chip royalties will only cover R&D costs". By "AMTX shut out" he means AMTX failing to sell AMTX-manufactured, AMTX-labeled ATU-R's and DSLAM's. That's where the money is.
<<How about MSFT/GTE/INTC? --- who are all working on DMT at some level.>>
what is MSFT doing that's DMT-specific? INTC? neither have business relationships with AMTX.
<<so let me ask why you're rattling the sabre>>
this started because you poo-poo'ed WSTL's prospects and implied that even BA/NYX wasn't forgone conclusion CAP.
<< following have announced they'll go all or predominantly with DMT: [list]>>
This is weak. Except for the gang of four, none of the companies or countries (!) has made any such announcement. (I agree many of those will go DMT but that's not the same thing.) "The Prime Minister of Netherlands today announced that the country will go all or predominantly DMT." I must've missed that one. :-) GTE certainly hasn't announced "most or all DMT". Just because DMT vendors are trialing or pursuing markets doesn't mean the country is locked up for DMT. Lucent, Nortel, and Westell are all proffering CAP worldwide as are many others.
BTW, based on N+I conversations with Nortel i'd have to put theml in the CAP camp for now, and expect canadian telcos to go CAP.
