we disagree.... subsidies are useful to support new industries, but this one is mature, and suffers overcapacity and overproduction born of subsidy, so in a way your phrase - "this means all the semis must be hated because these 'exist on subsidy' - I don't think so." is - while needlessly sardonic - stunningly accurate... it has been an industry to avoid, and subsidy is one of the core reasons why... when they disappear, and investors have to make economic returns from their investments, capacity will shrink....
