Quadrant International's PC/DVD Decoder Boards Certified For Macrovision Copy Protection
August 1, 1997
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via Individual Inc. -- Macrovision Corporation (NASDAQ:MVSN) announced today that Quadrant International (QI) has been certified to incorporate Macrovision copy protection in PC/DVD decoder boards.
This certification will help Hollywood studios prevent unauthorized copying, and will allow for a wide variety of programming to be made available to PC users whose DVD drives are equipped with copy protection-capable PC/DVD decoder boards.
Commenting on this certification, Macrovision Corporation's Copy Protection Group Vice President, Mark Belinsky said, "As the first PC-DVD solution to be validated by Macrovision, we are pleased to have worked with QI to allow for the integration of copy protection into their CineMaster(TM) PC/DVD decoder boards. QI's DVD licensing strategy will also allow our PC manufacturer licensees to quickly integrate DVD capabilities into their multimedia personal computer systems."
"Our Macrovision certification gives us another first," said Mike Marks, DVD Strategic Marketing Manager at QI. "Just two months ago, CineMaster(TM) became the first DVD decoder board to begin volume shipments and then quickly followed by being named IBM's first and only decoder board for the company's new Aptiva series. Becoming Macrovision's first certified decoder board licensee adds another competitive advantage to QI's position in the marketplace."
The Macrovision copy protection feature is implemented inside DVD players and PCs as part of an integrated circuit which converts the digital video from the disc to the analog form required by standard TV sets. In the DVD environment, program suppliers are able to set a 'flag' on their discs which will activate the copy protection circuit in the DVD player. When such a disc is played back in a player or through an authorized and licensed video decoder board inside a personal computer, the Macrovision-capable circuit applies copy protection to the outgoing analog video signal. The technology will not affect viewing of the program, but will degrade copies made on most VCRs to the extent that they lose their entertainment value.
The CineMaster(TM) DVD decoder board series has been setting the standard for DVD functionality and performance since the product's release in spring of 1996. Today, hundreds of CineMaster(TM) boards are being used by content developers to author their DVD titles. CineMaster(TM) fully supports the MCI command set being used in today's games, which provides consumers with the widest possible content compatibility with game titles in existence and in development today. It was one of the first DVD decoders to implement universal disk format (UDF) for complete playback of large capacity (greater than 4 gigabyte) DVD-ROM titles, which strengthens CineMaster's(TM) content compatibility even more. It is one of only a few DVD decoder boards that incorporate Video-Out for playing digital video movies directly to the television.
Quadrant may procure Macrovision capable integrated circuits from among 29 Macrovision-authorized semiconductor suppliers, including Analog Devices, Crystal Semiconductor, GEC Plessey, Mitsubishi Electric, Philips Semiconductor, SGS Thomson Microelectronics, and Toshiba Corporation.
