Piecing together facts is not "reliving the events", and in this case "the facts" are both slim and contradictory.
I think you confuse Empathy with Sympathy. Empathy is the ability to see perspectives, not an affinity. Empathy would be feeling their emotions, it goes beyond sympathy.
It's "Direct identification with, understanding of, and vicarious experience of another person's situation, feelings, and motives."
