Cool.

Hard Tack Or Hardtack - The Pirate's Treasure

1 tsp salt
1 lb flour
water

Mix everything together to make a fairly stiff dough and flatten out to about 1/2 inch if you treasure your teeth. Take the band from a large Mason jar cap and punch out circles of dough. Use your hook (or a fork) to pierce holes in each - but not all the way through. Bake on a flat sheet at 250F (you can brown it first at 400F if you want) for two or three hours. You pay the dental bills!

Oh, and you can knead the dough to activate the gluten, but what's the point?

There are quite a few recipes for it.... Saltines probably had hardtack as an ancestor!
