A Legacy Application is typically an old but still used application that is running on a platform whose support is in question, or where no further enhancements are happening.

When Open Systems became all the rage in the early 90's a Legacy Application was typically a mainframe or mini-computer application. In reality vendors use the term to describe a competitors platform they wish to take out by implying that it is behind the curve and/or of inferior technology. In that sense Microsoft is a legacy platform because it is desktop centric and poorly suited for the robust, secure and server centric requirements driven by the Internet.
