Dan,
remember that in the biggest prize of all, China, it seems that Microsoft's interests always go to the head of the list when we negotiate with that odd amalgam of commie crony capitalists. Why is that?
Enforcing copyright and patent laws, on a global basis, is not just in MSFT's interest. I'm sure the music and motion picture industries, to name just two, are also quite interested in not having their property copied and stolen. If China, or any other "commie crony capitalist" nation, fails to protect intellectual property, they will only hurt themselves in the long run. That goes for the United States as well.
War is peace, ignorance is strength, Windows is Open!
You forgot slavery is freedom. But really, Dan, applying Orwellian concepts of political oppression to a software product sold in a free market is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?
