Mike - with all this discussion of cheap PC's, Free PC's - the fundamental issue is that PC's are too difficult to use. With PC's being basically free i find it interesting that of my direct family no one except myself (I use a SPARC at work and a low powered PC at home) has been induced to buy a PC no matter how low the price goes. My parents have become interested in stock trading but the idea of them buying a PC and running windows is unthinkable - many of us posting on siliconinvestor are computer literate but the vast majority of the world is not - If microsoft has its way we'll all be running complex (and unreliable) desktop OS's which need to be upgraded every 2 years running huge hairball applications on top of them. I cant imagine my dad running down to COmpUSA and doing an OS upgrade and dealing with .DLL errors.

Sun's vision of Computing as a utility like electricity or water is dead on - you dont care what OS your phone company runs or upgrade its software, you just pick up the phone and you get a dial tone - simple.
