Kasriel is making an implicit assumption that the "small business" is homogenous.

Most small businesses are retail and food service. The NFIB report will reflect what these consumer oriented businesses report. NFIB tends to be heavily "mom & pop" type businesses.

Many of the new business are in health care, resources (oil, gas, metals, ethanol, farm related) and specialized services which sell to business.

As an example, lots of new businesses here in Silicon Valley, I don't expect many of the Web 2.0 people are filling out forms for the NFIB. I doubt many hedge funds are part of NFIB ;-)

Farming is booming with ethanol and the lower USD, generating many new jobs. I expect the lower US Dollar is a large driver.

Paul Kasriel is in Minnesota, he needs to drive around the state and look around.
