Someone else who likes Polanyi! I found it on my own and read it while sitting at my mother's hospital bedside after she almost died. In times of great stress, I can't read trash, I need to read something absorbing. Our military can't cope with ethnic violence in Iraq (or anyplace else) because they're selected (including self-selection) for other traits. And they're young. Thomas P.M. Barnett thinks we need a peace-keeping force made up of social workers and beat cops. Unfortunately in Iraq these days if you don't wear body armor and carry a machine gun and travel in an armored vehicle, you won't survive. Social workers and beat cops would be dead meat. But it's still a nice idea.
