Lucent Technologies Selected By SBC Communications To Provide Circuit-To-Packet Solution For Advanced Voice Applications
SBC signs multi-year contract with Lucent for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony solution aimed at bringing packet technology to businesses using central office services
MURRAY HILL, N.J., May 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) today announced a multi-year agreement with SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC - News) to provide SBC with an Internet Protocol (IP) Centrex solution that helps business customers take advantage of new cutting-edge central office-based services.
SBC will be using the Lucent IP Centrex platform for its SBC Centrex IP service, one service in a portfolio of solutions announced by SBC today (www.sbc.com).
With central office-based services, businesses can substantially reduce costs associated with buying and maintaining telecommunications equipment, protect against equipment obsolescence and cut down on the time and expense of moving or adding phone services for a changing workforce.
Since the equipment is monitored and maintained in the service provider's central office, business telephone services are protected against potential disasters and can take advantage of increased levels of physical and network security that help protect vital communications equipment and data.
The Lucent IP Centrex solution is an end-to-end offer incorporating the Lucent iMerge(TM) Centrex Feature Gateway (CFG) and the SpringTide® 7000 IP Service Switch. The iMerge(TM) CFG - which works with any Class 5 switch - serves as a bridge between circuit-switched networks and IP network infrastructures, delivering the features and functionality of that Class 5 switch on the packet network. The SpringTide® 7000 provides virtual routing and advanced IP services for enterprise security and address management.
Using voice-over-packet transport, the Lucent IP Centrex solution allows businesses to integrate their own voice and data networks over a single local area network to support all their business communications needs. It offers easy scalability and a cost-effective option to businesses migrating to IP telephony and is fully compatible with existing Centrex voice networks.
"SBC selected the iMerge(TM) Centrex Feature Gateway because of its ability to work with Class 5 switches from various suppliers, and its ability for one central office to support IP telephony services for as many as four satellite offices in the SBC architecture," said Charles Rudnick, senior vice president, SBC product marketing. "The new SBC Centrex IP combines the reliability customers have come to expect, together with important new services necessary to operate in today's business environment, all designed to work over existing SBC Centrex voice networks."
In April 2001, SBC and Lucent launched one of the nation's largest IP Centrex deployments at Lucent's Lisle, Ill. site. The deployment uses the Lucent iMerge(TM) Centrex CFG to serve more than 1,600 stations currently in use by Lucent employees.
"This agreement with SBC is a significant milestone in the evolution of circuit-to-packet technology. We are excited to support SBC as it expands the capabilities of its existing network to allow businesses access to cost- efficient, reliable and secure Centrex services," said Janet Davidson, president, Integrated Network Solutions for Lucent. "The Lucent IP Centrex solution offers the reliability of traditional central office-based services and adds the functionality of packet technology."
Live demonstrations of the Lucent iMerge(TM) CFG and SpringTide® 7000 products will be conducted in the Lucent booth #30848 in Hall A2 at SuperComm June 4-6, 2002 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
About the iMerge(TM) Centrex Feature Gateway (CFG)
The Lucent iMerge(TM) Centrex Feature Gateway (CFG), developed by Lucent subsidiary AG Communications with the support of Bell Labs, allows service providers to use existing central office equipment to extend Centrex features over packet networks, giving users powerful Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. The gateway combines the inherent reliability of the public switched telephone network with the cost-saving advantages of a packet network. iMerge(TM) CFG is a central element in the Lucent circuit-to-packet portfolio of products designed to bring packet capabilities to both traditional circuit and converged circuit-packet networks.
