I read it. As pro-Hiss as they dared.

Alger, Again [John J. Miller]

The Washington Post runs a soft-focus piece on the nephew of Alger Hiss, who claims his nice uncle wasn't a nasty Communist:

Alger Hiss was a spy, many scholars say.

He was not, say many others.

But it has to be noted that he was never indicted for espionage.

And it also has to be noted—thought the Post doesn't note it—that Hiss was indicted for perjury because the statute of limitations on espionage had expired.

Tomorrow, maybe the Post will run a story on Al Capone:

Al Capone was a gangster, many scholars say.

He was not, say many others.

But it has to be noted that he was never convicted for running a crime syndicate.

(He was convicted of tax evasion.)
