When chimps get into conflict such as with an encroaching lion, the women and children bunch and go to the back, the young males go charging forward to investigate and confront, the old geezer alpha male stays back to supervise proceedings.

When the young guys have sorted out the aggressors, the alpha male goes charging in to deliver the coup de grace and be the big man.

That's pretty much how humans do it too.

It's instinctive to defend women and children and in our miscegenated tribal ways, we defend more females and children than our own direct family.

It's not going to be very common to find women who are as good as blokes at doing fighting, assuming the standard for blokes is actually to select the best of the best who are the right stuff for fighting. If the average bloke was selected, there would be some women who would be as good and in a few instances better. But if the 90th percentile bloke is selected, as they should be, then there might be 1 woman in 1000 who would fit right in, and that's doubtful.

Women seem to be more of a hindrance than a help.

The fact that some women WANT to be involved is not a reason to hire them. Which is not to say that there might not be excellent roles for them, such as parachuting behind enemy lines to use language skills and other talents to disrupt opposition from behind. The right woman could perhaps walk right up to Osama in a burka and kill him.
