It doesn't make sense if I have to hire dozens more administrators to keep things running than I would need using an alternative that can read those same files. Nor does it make sense to saddle my users with administrative tasks outside their job description when administration could be centralized and simplified.

Even Microsoft seems (finally) to be admitting that their customers are clamoring for something like this.

Consider it as just a logical extension of the recognized trend toward outsourcing IT.
