Islamism is the term for a political ideology that misuses religious precepts as a tool to take power.

Because to a fundamentalist (though not necessarily militant) Muslim, Islam is the fulfillment of all mankind requires, spiritually, politically, and economically. There is no need for political ideologies, political parties, or democratic elections. Everything you need is spelled out in the Quran, according to their belief.
And if it isn't in the Quran, you will have your religious courts and judges who will provide their best interpretation of what they perceive the Quran's view is on your particular issue.
Thus, Islam is a political ideology. It's also a religious creed, and an economic policy. It's also a judicial reference.
And when you tie all of those disciplines together and harness the entire Umma (universal body of believers) to its advancement and domination over every other ideology and/or creed, and you have Fascism. In this case religious Fascism, or hence.. Islamo-Fascism. It all can be easily compared and contrasted to Mussolini's creation of the state as the "supreme being" of the people. Every sacrifice must be made for the advancement of the state. In MILITANT Islam, every sacrifice must be made for the advancement of Jihad.
Everything about the militant Jihadist agenda is designed to subjugate the rest of the globe, and impose its beliefs upon everyone.. And if you don't convert, you'll either be taxed out the @ss as a Dhimmi, or just be eliminated, if not enslaved.
The Taliban are radical Islamists. Those who join al Qaeda are radical Islamists.
Actually, they are REACTIONARY Islamists. There is nothing "radical" or progressive about their interpretations. In fact, they are looking to turn back the clock of history 1000 years because they believe that every western influence and innovation that they have absorbed has separated them from the perfection that previously existed under the rule of Muhammad.
Only by recreating, and enforcing that state of perfection can they truly be considered "pure" in the eyes of Allah.
