DSL modems may appear to be an acceptable way to offer digital-subscriber-line service, but they have one big drawback: They do not, by themselves, provide the basic data privacy most users expect. Various solutions to the data-privacy problem-including the use of Ethernet switches and routers at the central office-can add significantly to the cost of the service, require the piecemeal purchase of equipment from different vendors and still do not ensure total privacy..........
