Tommaso left out the intangible but very real benefit of spending four or more years generally on the dole, be it from Daddy, Pell or the monster loan that stays in a tiny corner of a student's mind. Better by far to spend a few years studying and getting blotto than to be turned loose on the world (or vice versa) at such a young and ignorant age.

Agreed on Medicare. I'm too lazy and it's too late to go digging for exact stats but allegedly something like 40% of the money spent in "private" health care goes to the paper chase of payment (insurance cos., HMO's, extra staff in doctors' offices collecting, bankcard discounts, piles of paperwork on every prescription, etc.). Now if a senior could only get a new pair of glasses and some dental work done without burning the return on their CD's for the rest of their life expectancy we might be able to say that for them, at least, U.S. medical economics have attained the level of an advanced third world country.
