KABUL, Afghanistan –– Opposition forces claimed Friday they broke though Taliban defenses and captured the key northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. The report could not be independently confirmed, but if true it would represent a major victory in the U.S.-led campaign.

Three opposition factions had been moving on Mazar-e-Sharif, the cornerstone of Taliban control of the north, backed by intense U.S. bombing in recent days that the opposition credited with helping clear Taliban defenses.
