What Small Caps Are Saying

Posted by Geoffrey Rogow

The jump in small-caps has led some investors to say the economy is really on the mend, but continued heightened volatility has small-cap experts not as sure.

Small-capitalization stocks, as measured by the Russell 2000, are up roughly 50% in only nine weeks. It’s a breakneck pace with floods of traders noting small-caps historically outperform in the initial period out of any recession and betting the move will foreshadow a second-half recovery.

But small-caps are some of the riskiest assets in the stock market and have also historically traded weakly when volatility was high, as it remains now. As such, volatility must begin to subside to normal levels, or more than just your garden-variety pullback is likely.
