LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 1997--Ligos Technology, a company recently established to bring advances in multimedia technology to both PCs and the Internet, today announced it has begun shipping LSX-MPEG Encoder, the industry's first software encoder to provide video compression for both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the opening of SIGGRAPH, the computer graphics industry's annual trade show.

Utilizing Intel's MMX(TM) technology, LSX delivers the fastest, highest-quality software encoding while maintaining small file sizes and low data rates. It provides fully scaleable, video for cost-effective use in low-bandwidth applications. LSX's simple and intuitive interface allows it to be used by a wide variety of multimedia developers, from novices just entering the field to professional content providers.

"LSX represents a major advance toward bringing high-quality video to both the Internet and the desktop," said Peter Forman, chief executive officer of Ligos. "Its versatility makes it the best solution for MPEG-compliant, multimedia development, especially for content providers who want to integrate video into Web applications."

The LSX-MPEG Encoder allows for variable compression ratios, providing users with the ability to generate very low data rate files. This makes LSX-generated MPEG files excellent for transfer over the Internet. Users can also output high-end multimedia content for broadcast applications.

As the only MPEG-1/MPEG-2 software encoder currently available, the LSX-MPEG Encoder provides a total solution not found in other MPEG compression software. This technology is based on Ligos' unique motion estimation algorithm, which provides LSX with extremely fast, high-quality software encoding. LSX-MPEG Encoder also allows users to custom tailor their applications by letting them choose video stream frame rate and data rate, as well as audio output in stereo, dual channel or joint stereo.

Pricing and Availability

The LSX-MPEG Encoder is available for only $99 directly from Ligos through the company's secure Web site at www.ligos.com . The company can also be reached toll-free at 888/464-8765.

Technology Available for License

LSX's extremely fast motion estimation algorithm is also available for licensing and can be applied to software and hardware (DSP or special processors) for videoconferencing, video encoding (MPEG and other video), image recognition and any other application that requires efficient motion estimation. For more information on licensing LSX's innovative technology, contact Ligos at mpeg@ligos.com or 415/437-6137.
