"What can Chartered do that Fab 36 can't, whether in terms of process or capacity ?"

Chartered is a contract fab. The difference between a contract fab and the fabs that AMD and Intel run is one of emphasis. AMD and Intel need high performance, contract fabs focus on good die per wafer. So the Chartered output will be modestly performing but at a low cost per die. Which is why the X2 3600+ is likely to be a Chartered product. 256k L2, modest clock speed and almost certainly low power consumption. Sure the initial shipment was 1k wafers, somewhere between 200k and 250k processors. But the contract is actually for 3k wafers per month, increasing to 5k. And that adds up to 1.8 to almost 4 million per quarter. A number that AMD isn't committed to taking, but can if there are orders.
