Unfortunately, in many human spheres, things are compared with the average rather than what could be. If the average is met, then the individual is considered to be just fine.

While one's offspring are not a good guide to what one could have been, they are some evidence. What could have been for me is a lot better than what I got. Not that anyone gets things perfect, or even slightly perfect. But there is bad and less bad. Of course there are hordes of people worse off than I ever was. Life is bleak all over, full of ignorance and lost opportunity.

In many ways it's no bad thing that we only live for 80 years and the next generation can have a go at getting things right. Burying mistakes and a fresh start is part of business life and politics too. The USA is increasingly thinking that they got it wrong in Iraq and the War on Terror [which nobody can even identify - so far it looks like the War for Big Brother rather than the War against Terror].

Ignorance is a dominant human characteristic. We are also strong on stupidity. When we combine our ignorance with our stupidity, then throw in some selfish bias, it's no wonder there is a LOT of carnage.
