Bankrupt DBS service AlphaStar is having a fire sale, but DirecTv is not necessarily buying. While DBS distributors are always looking for additional transponder space, some aren't interested if the price tag is too high. Asked at the recent SBCA show in Nashville, Tenn., if he has any interest in AlphaStar's Telstar 5 transponder, DirecTv president Eddy Hartenstein was noncommittal. "We've looked at that for the past couple of weeks, but we still have questions as to what's included in that deal," said Hartenstein. DirecTv is turning its nose at a number of AlphaStar's assets. The most notable, he said, is AlphaStar's "haunted" Oxford, Conn., uplink center, which had also served as the uplink center for failed DBS venture SkyPix in the early 1990s. |
