To me the complexities of biology and DNA and the interaction of all the various chemistry of life occurs at a molecular level that is orders and orders of magnitude more complex than the problems of finding or detecting and identifying what's what even in a country as large as Afghanistan. The thing to understand is that communications of the exact nature and topology or disposition of an enemy can be determined with detailed accuracy that is mind boggling. The other thing to remember is that massive wide area data collection is going on day after day and all this detailed data collected over days is still sitting in a computer. All kind of differences analysis can be run on past data as new areas of interest appear and this integration of observation of days, week, months make hiding out in arid mountains extremely difficult.

In the past all the tactical sensor were seen by one or two and none was really recorded because of limitations of the technology. Today not just the local operator of a sensor but dozen can look at information and in many cases in real time and after the fact. Today far more accurate up to the minute communication exists between everyone. Multiple analyst can be reviewing the area of interest and communicating in real time. For example the radar pictures on my SAR page in a project I worked on were downloaded ad video with embedded tactical information in real time and this stream was then using standard 28.8 modems sent to multiple locations, the Pentagon and other bases. The tactical data was used to show where the sensor plane was and the frame of the area on a map. This was in 1994. So today I can only wonder at what is capable as then we struggled with limitation of technology that was 1/10th or 1/100th what we have today.

All the talk of this will be a long war etc does not understand that it takes a few month to get the right stuff in place. Also getting the folks over their to understand how we go about finding and attacking takes time. Now that the first successful operations have started and resources ramp up I expect more and more acceleration in success. Weather is the only variable that can freeze a particular situation. Other than that the Taliban are doomed.

In medicine as in this War technologies. There is so much information that even today computers are working at full pace. But the speed of getting answers is constantly improving. But the real difference in medicine is that in many cases people don't know what questions they really need to ask. Someone has an idea an studies it and it looks promising. But then the narrow results when expanded to take into account all variables looks far less impressive.

But that's because their is still a very limited understanding in how it all plays together.
