Re the AI quote you posted <<. Many of those who oppose mutilation deny that there is any link between the practice and religion, >>

A lack of a one-to-one correspondence hardly obfuscates a link, however uncomfortable acknowledging the link may make "many of those who oppose mutilation."

There is a link between FGM and Islam and between FGM and cultures that treat women cruelly and oppressively.

This assumes, of course, that one agrees that certain kinds of treatment of women are cruel and oppressive.

"Vibrant"? So was the Third Reich. Great rallies! Carmina Burana! Leni Riefenstahl! Oktoberfest!

When you talk about "vibrant" cultures in the ME and Africa in proximity to the phrase "appreciate the differences between us," you seem to me in the grip of a PC obligation to see no evil hear no evil speak no evil where the perpetrators of it are third world.

It reminds me of Oliver Stone's recent description of the events of September 11 as a "revolt."

And of Katha Pollitt's recent reference to the heroes of September 11 as "heroes."

In quotes. Yes, she put the word in quotes.
